It wasn't a cakewalk for the 7th-ranked Pirates (15-4 overall, 1-1 District play), particularly in the first half of action.
They led 5-0 early on and the lead grew to 16-10 with two minutes to play, but the Eagles went on an 8-0 run to end the quarter and led 18-16 going into the second quarter.
Eagle guard Josh Mattox and postman Jayson Gurule began to wreak a little havoc on the Pirates and essentially kept Belen in the game into the second quarter. Yet when Grants took the lead back at 23-22, on Lopez's steal and two, they would never trail again.
Their lead moved to 37-29 in the second quarter, and up to 56-43 at the end of three, as the PIrates' defense tightened and the Eagles' legs seemed to be failing them.
Grants led by as many as 20 in the fourth quarter (67-47) before Belen scored eight straight - with several Pirate reserves on the floor - to end the scoring and the game.
"I'm pleased with the win," Grants head coach Marty Zeller said after the game. "We were a little too excited to finally be back at home (after 55 days) but we settled down and got the job done."
Grants now heads to 4th-ranked Volcano Vista on Tuesday, February 9 for yet another key District 6-4A game. The Hawks and 10th-ranked St. Pius squared off on Friday night, but the game score was not yet posted at the time of this recap.
