Appeals court to visit GHS

GRANTS - A three-judge panel of the Court of Appeals will be at Grants High School on Monday, Feb. 8. When the Court of Appeals is called to order at 10 a.m., students will have the opportunity to observe oral argument in a criminal case currently pending before the Court. After oral argument, the judges and the attorneys who argued the case will answer questions posed by the students.

Chief Judge Cynthia A. Fry of the New Mexico Court of Appeals said that, “Volunteer attorneys from the local bar association receive copies of the appellate briefs, study the issues presented and meet with students and their teachers to familiarize them with the issues and arguments prior to the hearing of oral argument. I thank the volunteer attorneys for playing an important role in making this a meaningful experience for the students.”

During the past three years, the Court of Appeals has held over twenty oral arguments in ten different cities throughout the state.
