Ancient Way Festival beings Friday

CIBOLA COUNTY - If you can imagine an 80-mile block party, open house and celebration of the arts and beauty of northwest New Mexico, then you have a fair idea of the annual Ancient Way Fall Festival, which will kick off Oct. 4. The festival runs over two weekends and includes such diverse activities as art exhibits, a cycling tour, a fiber arts demonstration, cave tours and a farmer's market. Many children's activities are included in the events, so it's a great family outing.


The festival begins in Grants and wends its way down scenic Highway 53 to Zuni Pueblo.

Following are events scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 4-5:

  • The Double Six Gallery in Grants will host an artists' reception for the current Ceramics Show on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

  • The Village of San Rafael will hold its annual Fiesta starting with a mass at 10 a.m. on Sunday to be followed by a dinner, food sales, a silent auction, games and raffles.

  • The Cimarron Rose Bed and Breakfast on Highway 53 will sponsor a barn sale and giveaway featuring appliances, home d/cor, kitchenware, clothing and doghouses. The inn's Tierra Madre Art Gallery will also have a sale and raffle on Oct. 4 and 5.

  • The Old School Gallery near El Morro will sponsor a presentation on “Navajo and the Churro Sheep on Oct. 4 at 3 p.m. and a gallery reception on Oct. 5 at 3 p.m.

  • The El Morro R.V. Park and Ancient Way Caf/ will host a variety of activities to include Zuni fetish carving and silversmith demonstrations, a blacksmithing demonstration, a wolf visit from the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and an evening bonfire and jam session on Oct. 4. The Zuni artists and bonfire will return on Oct. 5. On both days, the Ancient Way Caf/ will feature barbequed brisket, chicken and baby back ribs with guava sauce.

  • The Inscription Rock Trading and Coffee Co. will feature live music beginning at 1 p.m., games, a pumpkin carving contest, bingo, arts and crafts and food on Oct. 4. Bring your own chair for the music event.

  • Kate Brown's store, located across the highway from the Ancient Way Caf/, will be selling Dixon apples and Velarde chile ristras.

  • The Ramah Farmer's Market will host a Harvest Home benefit dinner, a pie-baking contest and auction, a harvest table competition, a beautiful chicken contest and a giant pumpkin/squash and weirdest vegetable competition on Oct. 4. The produce market will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the crafts market will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • The Zuni Fall Arts Festival and Market will feature arts demonstrations, food and traditional dancers as well as a display teaching how to identify authentic arts on both Oct. 4 and 5 beginning at 10 a.m.

  • The Zuni McKinley County Fair Horse Race Committee will sponsor the annual human/horse relay race on Oct. 4, which will feature a 9.5-mile course with 5.5 miles on hoof and 4.0 miles on foot. The top four contestants will receive cash and trophy prizes. There will also be a non-competitive 5K fun run and walk. This event will be held on DY Springs Road in Zuni.

  • El Malpais National Monument will conduct Junction Cave tours. Call 1-505-783-4774 for dates and times. El Morro National Monument will also provide ranger-led hikes. Call 1-505-783-4226 for specific details.
